ABOUT US

EPF's Prosimian Sanctuary is the only sanctuary in the US dedicated solely to providing behavioral rehabilitation and lifelong care for lemurs and other prosimians rescued or surrendered from the pet trade, roadside zoos, and other inappropriate environments.

Lemurs make up a large percentage of the estimated 15,000 primates kept as pets in the US. They are also exploited at roadside zoos and as entertainers and photographic props. There is tremendous demand for sanctuary space because so many private owners have learned the hard way that wild animals like lemurs do not belong in human environments. Other reputable sanctuaries either don’t accept prosimians or are at or near capacity.

Residents of the Prosimian Sanctuary receive specialized professional care, most often for the first time in their lives.

  • Medical care

  • Behavioral rehabilitation for stereotypic or self-injurious behavior, and/or social skill deficits

  • Socialization with others of their own and/or similar species

  • Nutrition specially formulated for species and individual needs

  • Habitats offering free-access to spacious indoor/ outdoor areas

  • Caretakers with combined prosimian experience of over 25 years

Animal Welfare

Prosimians and other primates are wild animals, not pets! They require specialized, professional care in order to thrive in human care.

Public Health & Safety

Prosimians and other primates can inflict serious injuries and transmit diseases to people. Risks are greatly increased in human homes.

Conservation

Most prosimians are endangered! Their exploitation in the pet trade, roadside zoos, entertainment, and as photographic props hinders conservation initiatives.

“Those who wish to pet and baby wild animals “love” them. But those who respect their natures and wish to let them live normal lives, love them more.”
~Edwin Way Teale, Circle of the Seasons, 1953
